The biggest problems small businesses face is getting the visitors in the first place. We see so many business websites beautifully designed with little to no traffic.
There are many ways to pay to get traffic to your website, but many small business are reluctant to take this route. The best way to success is free traffic from Google to your website using the keywords or key phrases most likely to be used by individuals looking for your businesses products or services. Application of those keywords is most important in the title tags of your web pages and within the body copy.
You can do a quick check on Google free keywords tool and see the amount of visitors those keywords could bring to your website.
The two most important factors for keyword research
1. Understanding what keywords your customers are likely to use to find you.
2. Discover what the competition is like on those keywords.
When you are deciding on keywords, the most important factor is competition for those phrases. Your goal is to get as high as possible in Google for keywords or phrases you know your customers are most likely to use when searching for your services. What you will probably find is that one or two keywords relevant to your business are very likely provide you with millions of results. So the chance of you being ranked high is very slim.
The best bet is to go for longer keyword phrases, the search traffic will be lower, but the chances of getting onto page 1 on Google are higher as the competition will be far less. You can also use geographical towns as keywords to further reduce competition from country wide or global searches.
It is better to create ten pages all receiving 10 searches a day each and rank number one. If you decide on a competitive keyword with 20,000 searches a month, the chances are you will never be found because you are on page 200. Most people searching do not beyond page 3.
Obviously, keywords are a huge topic and this barley scratches the surface, but if you really want a successful website there is no choice.
