As we all look forward to a successful 2010 and given the Christmas break, we are given time to reflect on stories that come to mind of past experiences and how we can use them to craft a future of success.
I remember many years back when a young yet fast growing corporate first employed me. I was asked to put the creative together for a Direct Marketing Campaign.
New to the company I asked no questions, I assumed that they knew the profile of their customer, they knew their brief would work across all countries in Europe. Plus I assumed that they had in place all the necessary tracking so they would know the success of their campaign.
Because I was young and these marketing people were telling me how important they were, I went along with their brief and their process.
My gut feeling was they were given a budget and merely had to spend it or loose it.
They specifically asked for three campaigns and submitted written briefs.
All three campaigns were designed and approved and the first two campaigns went out the door with out any problems.
I called a meeting with the VP of marketing. The third part of this campaign was not cheap to produce and so I decided to ask some questions.
I asked for the results from the first two campaigns.
The VP looked uncomfortable at the question… I then mentioned that unless we could track the success against the goals of the campaign then I might as well take the marketing budget and burn it right now!
There were no goals set, no tracking and no real understanding of who the customer really was…
As expected, the campaign was a massive flop!
Hundreds of thousands of pounds were thrown down the drain …
So as you look at the year ahead I wonder if your thoughts are on how successful you will be over the coming twelve months.
Despite the recession still in our minds, the worry is not about enough money being available. Because there is always money, there are always customers? The one worry we all have is time, even Bill Gates only has 24 hours in every day!
So make every hour count and ask yourself some great questions get the best information and follow those who have achieved what you desire.
Imagine this for just a moment… There is a plan for you to achieve 1 Million Pounds in one year, the problem is you probably don’t know what it is… and if you think that is far fetched…
…Imagine from a simple idea in 1998, from a blank piece of paper on a kitchen table creating a company worth $153.4 billion in just 12 years. Unbelievably yes, there was a plan to achieve this and Google achieved it!
The reality is whatever your goal no matter how unachievable it seems there is a plan to achieve it!
The only difference between those that achieve and those that don’t are their actions.
Wishing you all a Happy and Prosperous 2010
