DMOZ the open directory used to be the holy grail for search engine optimisation backlinks or votes for your website because it was said that Google placed high credibility on the worlds most trusted hand edited directory.
There is much speculation on the importance of being in DMOZ today, but for the small amount of effort required and the possibility of greater standing in the worlds greatest search engine Google I think the effort out weighs the risk of not getting in.
Being hand edited many websites do not making it into DMOZ. Either the website owner is careless with their application which is frowned upon or the category is so competitive that an editor would need years just to get to your application.
The advice out there is to make a careful application, follow their instructions to the letter and then you might get in within 2 years.
Flipsem.com was listed in DMOZ within 9 months of the domain being created.
Here is the link Dmoz and flipsem
So what did we do?
Example: Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: England: Buckinghamshire: Aylesbury: Business and Economy: Computers and Internet
Notice that we have drilled down into the town and the county as well as the business categories.
The more specific you are the more use you are to the directory and the less work an editor in these niche categories has to do.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
